LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Jeff Cheal and his team from Sherbrooke – Branch 10 claimed the 2011 Royal Canadian Legion Quebec Command Provincial Curling Championship on January 16. Sherbrooke – Branch 10 was the event host, while on ice events took place at the Lennoxville and North Hatley Curling Clubs. Twelve teams from around the province competed in a split-round robin format.

It was team Cheal’s third straight provincial crown for the team that has also hoisted the national championship trophy on two occasions. The team made up of Cheal (Johnville, Que.), Evan Mooney (Lennoxville, Que.), Matt McCrea (Lennoxville) and Danny Comeau (Fleurimont, Que.) was the team to beat over the four days of the event.  They started off with a strong 4-0 record in the split round robin portion of the event, good enough to seal up first place in their pool.  Their only blemish came in the final round robin game. In the playoffs they won their first game earning them a bye to the finals, where they once again proved to be the best.

Taking the long road to the final was the other local team, team Lassenba from North Hatley – Branch 242. Brad Lassenba (Waterville, Que.), Martin Rourke (Waterville), Andrew Hatch (Lennoxville) and Jeff Bailes (Sherbrooke, Que.) had to work their way to the finals. They finished their split round robin in a tie for second in their pool and had to play a tie-breaker to make it to the playoffs.  They were victorious over Team MacLennan from Buckingham – Branch 54 in the tie breaker before beating Lynda Putnam and her team from Hudson – Branch 115 in the page playoff game.  The semi-final saw Lassenba make a draw on his last rock of the game to take two points and propel his team to victory over team Favreau of Cowansville – Branch 99.

In the finals it was team Cheal from the get go as they were able to score a quick three points in the first end thanks to a long run-back made by Mooney, followed by a great draw behind cover.  Cheal then relied on his sweepers to paper by a guard, and then made no mistake on his final rock to secure the third point. Lassenba and his team showing fatigue as they played their third game of the day struggled throughout allowing Cheal and his team openings where they made no mistake.  After Cheal made a quiet hit on his final rock in the sixth end, it was good enough for handshakes and the provincial crown.

“It’s exciting to be able to win this event as the host.  We’re looking forward to going back to Hudson to compete for the National title,” said Cheal.

Cheal, Mooney and Comeau have won the National title on two occasions, the first coming in Hudson in 2002. McCrea joined the team when they once again captured the title in 2005.

The 2011 Royal Canadian Legion Quebec Command Provincial Curling Championship hosted by Sherbrooke – Branch 10 took place at the Lennoxville and North Hatley Curling Clubs from January 13-16. It was a familiar result for team Cheal of the host branch as they claimed the title for the third straight year, this time over team Lassenba of North Hatley – Branch 242.  Team Cheal will now prepare for the Legion Nationals which will be hosted by Hudson – Branch 115 in March.
